Denim has been resurfacing the past few years – from jumpers to midi skirts, vintage straight cut pants, distressed jeans, super high skinnys etc. I’ve never really found a pair of jeans that fits me well, especially skinnys because my thighs and waist measurements are just too disproportionate. I dance and I train my legs quite a bit, so they’re bigger than normal and I have the usual problem of jeans fitting the thighs but too loose for the waist and vice versa.
I plucked up the courage to get this of pair of super high waisted skinny jeans Joni from Topshop. I love the colour (it’s actually slightly lighter than what you see in the photos) – it’s a lovely old school, classic denim blue. I don’t have much colours in my wardrobe and I usually go for dark denim, but I like the vintage vibes this pair gives off! It’s also ripped neatly at the knees unlike the usual distressed jeans, which adds on the minimal outlook.
I’m not going to lie, it takes some courage to wear this pair and I wasn’t used to it initially. Because it’s super high waisted, it really shows the curvature of your hips, legs and waist. I don’t have the best figure around so it’s not the type of clothing that I was comfortable with, but it fitted really nicely. Although it highlights your thighs, the plus point is that it highlights your calves and ankles as well, which makes your legs look slimmer and longer. Surprisingly I didn’t feel fat wearing them, and the material is so comfortable and stretchy that I could even dance in them.
I wouldn’t suggest pairing it with an overly baggy top (which is something we would naturally go for to accentuate the skinny jeans) because it may tilt the balance a bit too much and put too much focus on the waist and hips instead of highlighting your legs. I would suggest going with loose fit but straight cut tops. I went with a simple plain and straight-cut halter top which has lovely back details – the material was slightly more structured than chiffon so it wouldn’t fluff up my torso too much.
For accessories I wore my favourite Twisted Necklace from a Hongkong brand called madegrey. I’m a real sucker when it comes to handmade accessories, and I love how unpredictable the twists in the necklace are. Because each piece is handmade, so the twists are never identical.
I’m really happy that I tried another piece/type of clothing that I never dared to, and now it’s one of my go-to denim staples because it looks and feels so good wearing it – and you really don’t need a model figure to wear it. Hope it encourages you guys to try out something new as well, don’t be afraid! It really builds up your self-confidence and it helped me better understand my body shape – which expanded my wardrobe choices and it’ll help me make smarter choices regarding my buys in future. I’ll love to hear what you guys think in the comments below, and do share with me if you have similar experiences! 🙂
